British Values
Promoting British Values at Emley First School
The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs." The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. Our school's Prevent policy can be found here.
At Emley we work hard to ensure that these values are: reinforced regularly, evident in all aspects of school life and well embedded in the curriculum. We are committed to serving our community. We recognize the multi-cultural, multi-faith nature of the United Kingdom and understand the crucial role our school plays in promoting these values. We aim to nurture our children so that they grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults. Our school and its curriculum reflects British Values in all that we do.
Democracy
- Children are involved in democratic processes e.g. voting for school counsellors and shared rewards.
- The school council is led by a member of staff and adheres to democratic processes reporting its actions to the Governing body.
Rule of Law
- Golden Rules are agreed on transition days and in the first week at the beginning of the new school year.
- We have a clearly structured behaviour policy which is followed and understood by all.
- We review behaviour incidents in school.
- Assemblies are delivered with a focus on the law when timely.
Liberty and Freedom
- Pupils have key roles and responsibilities in school e.g. every class has class managers
- Within school pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.
- As a school we educate and provide boundaries for pupils to make choices safely.
- Through our extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given freedom to make choices.
- The aims and vision of the school are reflected in all that we do.
Respect and Tolerance
Respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
- Our R.E. curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and beliefs.
- Pupils visit places of worship
